We start each session by saying “Good Morning / Afternoon”, singing songs and rhymes and talking about our weekend or daily experiences. We practise taking turns in conversations, listening to others and building our self confidence to speak in front of a familiar group. Snack times are spent in small groups. This is a relaxed, social time for us to talk together.
During the Nursery session, we benefit greatly from adult support across the activities where we are encouraged to use a developing range of vocabulary.
Pre-reading skills are developed across the curriculum in activities such as matching games, sound games, listening to and enjoying a range of stories and learning rhymes and songs.
We are encouraged to use a wide range of writing tools which are available in both the indoor and outdoor environment. We are taught how to hold writing tools correctly and develop good habits. The children’s hand-eye coordination is developed through construction and throwing and catching activities.
We can take home a library book each week which must be returned for a new book to be issued.
1, 2, 3, 4, 5 once I caught a fish alive! Through the use of songs, we will familiarise ourselves with number names and develop counting skills.
Our mathematical understanding is developed through practical activities both through indoor and outdoor activities. This half term there is a strong focus on shape names, counting to 10 and matching quantity to number names.
This half term we will be focussing on the following two characteristics:
Time will be spent to establish the rules and routines in Nursery which will enhance our sense of security in our new environment. Positive relationships are modelled to us through our class teddy during circle times. We are encouraged to make positive friendships with other children.
We encourage the children’s efforts to manage their personal needs (toileting), putting on and taking off their own coat and talking about the importance of handwashing.
We have access to the outdoor environment to enjoy daily energetic play and develop gross motor skills. Using a range of large and small equipment.
We enjoy a range of malleable activities that will help to strengthen finger and hand muscles.
The imaginative play takes place daily in Nursery through a variety of play situations, but particularly in the role play area. This half term our role play area will be a home, where all children can draw upon their own experiences of this environment to act out stories.
We will experiment with colour and materials through painting, printing, junk modelling and cutting and sticking. The music area is available throughout the session and we encourage the children to use the instruments and explore the different sounds they make and to listen to music from around the world.
We will talk about ourselves, our families and share stories from home. We are all special and unique!
As the weather will be changing slowly we will also start learning more about Autumn. We will look at the changes in our environment.
